FORECAST: AM sun to PM clouds with spotty showers
Nov 20, 2024
After last night's heavy rain and strong wind gusts as a cold front swept across the region, we're starting off cooler and clear behind this front.
Today, with mainly sunny skies in the morning, more clouds build in for the afternoon. Some of these clouds will produce some rain showers in the afternoon, but it will not be a washout.
For western MD and parts of WV, it will be scattered snow showers today. A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect at 10am for western Allegany County, MD and for Mineral County, WV and remains in effect until 10pm tonight as a few inches of accumulating snowfall is expected, especially for the higher elevations.
For Garrett County, MD, a Winter Storm Warning goes into effect at 10am and will remain in effect until Friday night as several rounds of accumulating snowfall are expected from today through late Friday. Westernmost parts of Garrett County, especially for the western slopes, could receive 6-12" of snowfall, with the heaviest of the snow falling Friday morning into the early afternoon. With that heavy snow, we'll also have strong wind gusts that could be up to 40 mph, making for whiteout conditions at times.
Outside of the mountains region, we could see some snow flurries mixing in for north-central MD before it quickly changes to rain as temperatures warm up to around 40 Friday afternoon. Wind chills will be in the 30s all-day tomorrow, as winds pick up out of the WSW at 10-20 mph with higher gusts. Overall, expect a cold rain for much of the region tomorrow outside of the mountains region.
The weekend brings drier conditions while it will still be breezy Saturday. Highs both weekend days will be in the lower to mid-50s.
We start off the week with highs around 60 Monday, followed by the upper 50s Tuesday with some spotty showers. For the busiest travel day of the year, it will be slightly cooler with highs in the upper 40s Wednesday.
