WINTER WEATHER WEEK: Could the last two years of no snow mean a new normal?
Nov 21, 2024
ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) - Rochester averages around 100" of snow each winter season. That number can be ignored over the past two years as both 2022-23 and 2023-24 have been seriously lacking, adding to around half of average.
The last ten years have had some recent spikes in snowfall, most notably the 2017-18 season when Rochester got over 120".
For that to happen again, we would need a good start to the season. That did not happen in 2022 and 2023, when less than 10" fell through December 1. When that happens, it is extremely difficult for Rochester to catch up in snowfall.
In 2015-16 season, less than 10" fell through December 31 and the season ended with 63.7".
Before that was the 2011-12 season that finished at 59.9". The only outlier before that was the 2006-07 season that finished at 107.2". If Rochester finishes December under a foot of snow, it will be extremely likely that the season will finish below average.
