TOPEKA (KSNT) - A long-time Gage Park mini-train conductor passed away last weekend.
Duane J. Brunkow, 95, of Duluth, passed away on Nov. 16, 2024, according to his obituary. He served as a conductor for Topeka's unique mini-train "Iron Horse," ferrying children and families around Gage Park.
Brunkow enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War before being stationed in France where he married his wife on March 6, 1951. He finished his service with the Air Force with the rank of staff sergeant and moved to Topeka.
Brunkow then worked for the United States Post Office for 30 years delivering mail, according to his obituary. After retiring he worked as a conductor of the Gage Park mini-train.
"Duane was a creative handyman who was ready to fix everything around the home and for others who needed help," his obituary read. "His family time was dedicated to activities that brought happiness, fun, and memories."

27 News spoke to Sean Zears with Shawnee County Parks and Recreation who said Brunkow was liked by everyone.
"[Brunkow was] one of the employees who oversaw the train said he would come up in his conductor outfit and say hi to everyone after he stopped conducting the train," Zears said. "He was liked by everyone and brought a smile to people’s faces. Our thoughts are with the family as they celebrate a wonderful man."
