Chatham County receives report of scammers impersonating FEMA agents
Nov 21, 2024
CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga, (WSAV) - The Chatham County Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) has received reports of scammers who are impersonating FEMA agents as a way to enter homes.
According to officials, after a disaster scam artists and identity thieves will target individuals who have been affected in an effort to take advantage. CEMA encourages residents to report any activity they feel to be suspicious.
Demand to see identification if an unknown individual approaches your property claiming to be FEMA.
A FEMA housing inspector will never ask for your nine-digit registration number as they will have already had it in their records. They will always wear an official government badge as a way to identify themselves.
Inspectors will never ask for banking information as FEMA does not charge a fee to conduct inspections. They will never climb on roofs or enter crawl spaces.
Don’t trust someone who asks for money. DHS, FEMA, SBA, and other federal agencies will never charge applicants for disaster assistance or help in filling out applications.
Report anyone who promises a disaster grant and asks for large cash deposits or advance payments in full.
Con artists and criminals may try to apply for FEMA assistance using names, addresses and Social Security numbers they have stolen from survivors.
If a FEMA inspector comes to your home and you have not filed a FEMA application, your information may have been used without your knowledge. Tell the inspector you did not apply for FEMA assistance.
If you receive a letter from FEMA but did not apply for assistance, please call 800-621-3362.
