Cold temperatures and wintry conditions arrive on Thursday
Nov 21, 2024
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Thursday! Our first shot of wintry weather has arrived across central and eastern Kentucky. Winter Weather Advisories go into effect for most of the area later this afternoon and will last through Friday morning. Only light snow accumulation, upwards of an inch in most spots, is expected. However, because this is the first snow chance of the season, this could cause some minor travel impacts across the area during your Thursday evening commute.
Our waves of precipitation willing be moving in, in three different rounds.
Round #1 – Mid-to-late morning Thursday
This will be moving in during your morning commute and will likely start off as rain, before becoming a rain/snow mix at times. Temperatures will be above freezing while the round moves in, so expect roadways to be wet. If/when we get some snow flakes mixing in you could see a brief drop in visibility on the roadways.
Round #2 – Late afternoon through early Friday morning
The second round of precipitation will be the main event for us this go around. A round of snow showers will arrives during the late afternoon and early evening. This showers could be briefly heavy at times. This will also lead to light accumulation on grassy & elevated surfaces. This could also cause some minor travel impacts as well. Low visibility and isolated slick/slushy spots will be possible, especially after sunset. This will exit during early morning hours on Friday. Be alert for remaining slick spots where areas are at-or-below freezing.
Round #3 – Friday midday through the early evening
Friday morning will start off very cold. Temperatures will be in the low 30s, while wind chill values will be in the upper teens and low 20s thanks to a breezy westerly wind. As the morning progresses, another round of rain/snow showers will be moving in out of the north. This will likely eventually turn over to all rain as temperatures will be reaching the low-to-mid 40s by the afternoon. Expect the blustery conditions to continue through the evening hours with wind chill values remaining in the upper 20s and low 30s.
We will gradually be warming up by the end of the weekend. Saturday will remain mostly cloudy and chilly, with afternoon highs in the mid-to-upper 40s. Sunday morning will be a cold one as well. But, by Sunday afternoon, temperatures will return into the 50s across the area.
The warmer temperatures continue into Monday as well. This will eventually lead to multiple systems tracking through the area during your Thanksgiving week and into extended holiday weekend. Temperatures will be colder for the middle of the week as well, falling back into the 40s. Rain, storms, and possibly wintry weather could impact holiday travel. That will be our next weather headline that we will turn our attention to over the weekend and into early week.
