Green Lake Sheriff shares new details on Ryan Borgwardt’s faked death, urges him to return

GREEN LAKE, Wis. (WFRV) - During a Thursday press conference, authorities in Green Lake County revealed new details about Ryan Borgwardt, confirming they have been in contact with him and he is safe.
On November 11, Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll said deputies established contact with Borgwardt through a woman who speaks Russian. Borgwardt provided a video showing he is alive, safe, and secure in his apartment, though its location remains undisclosed.
Authorities have developed a relationship with Borgwardt, maintaining daily communication. During these exchanges, Borgwardt explained how he staged his death and fled the country.
According to investigators, Borgwardt researched Big Green Lake, selecting it as the deepest lake in Wisconsin. On August 12, 2024, he allegedly stashed an electric bicycle near the boat launch, paddled to the center of the lake in a kayak, overturned it, tossed his phone into the water, and used an inflatable device to return to shore. From there, he rode the e-bike to Madison, a nearly seven-hour trip, and took a bus to Detroit. He then crossed into Canada and boarded a flight to another destination.
“The great news is that we know he’s alive,” Sheriff Podoll stated. “The bad news is we do not know where [Borgwardt] exactly is, and he has not yet decided to return home.”
Authorities are working to determine whether anyone assisted Borgwardt in his escape.
Borgwardt could face an obstruction charge in Wisconsin and may be required to repay the $35,000–$40,000 spent on search efforts. Federal charges are also possible, though no decisions have been made. While a warrant is not currently in place, authorities noted that could change as the investigation continues.
The Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office urged Borgwardt to return to the United States and “clean up the mess he’s made,” emphasizing the importance of his return for his wife and, more importantly, his children.
Sheriff Podoll suggested Borgwardt may fear the community’s reaction to his actions.
“I can see that,” Podoll said. “He staged his death, and unfortunately, one of the things he did say is that he didn’t expect us to go more than two weeks searching for him. I hate to tell him that he picked the wrong sheriff and the wrong department.”
Podoll also provided an update on Borgwardt’s family, noting their resilience throughout the ordeal.
“They continue to grow,” he said. “They’ve been very supportive, and they’ll get through this.”
The sheriff concluded the press conference on an emotional note, choking up as he delivered a heartfelt message.
“Christmas is coming, and what better gift he could give his kids than to be there for Christmas with them,” Podoll said.
Borgwardt has not indicated whether he plans to return to the United States, but authorities remain hopeful as communication continues.
Updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
