Card party shooter gets 85 years in prison

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) --Jerico Simmons will likely spend the rest of his life in prison for the shooting of a friend after a night of playing cards.
Thursday, Allen Superior Court judge Fran Gull sentenced Simmons, 30, to 85 years after he was found guilty two weeks ago for shooting Timothy Coats, 29, on Feb. 27 last year. The shooting took place in a garage off Illinois Road around midnight.
Coats was part of a party that included his sister that night. The whole party fled after Simmons stood up, looked at the television and then turned to shoot Coats in the head, court documents said.
After the shooting, Simmons took off with a friend who was also at the card party. Hours later, however, he crashed his 2013 Nissan Murano around 2:45 a.m. at the 263-mile marker on Interstate 69.

At the crash scene, Allen County detectives Gabe Furnish and other detectives found a gun tossed from the 2013 Nissan Murano that was jammed or “stovepiped” with a shell casing inside that matched a bullet found at the scene of Coats' death. Simmons was injured and transported to a hospital.
Sgt. Marc Deshaies of the Fort Wayne Police Department also contributed to the investigation that led to Simmons’ arrest.
