Ukrainians' approval of Zelensky, government at lowest point of war: Survey
Nov 21, 2024
Ukrainians' approval of President Volodymyr Zelensky and their national government has dropped more than 15 percentage points since 2023, a new Gallup survey revealed.
The drop marks the lowest support for Zelensky since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, though it's still higher than his approval ratings in 2020 and 2021, which sat at 41 percent.
According to the survey, 84 percent of Ukrainians approved of the job Zelensky was doing as the war started, but that number has dropped to 60 percent as of August 2024.
Similarly, disapproval ratings of Zelensky rose during that time frame, from 12 percent when the war started to 30 percent in August 2024, the poll showed.
According to Gallup, the drop is steepest among people who live in eastern Ukraine, the area closest to the front line of war.
The survey also found that Ukrainians' confidence in their government has dropped significantly since 2022, from 60 percent to 28 percent this year. From 2022 to 2023, confidence decreased by 13 percentage points, 60 percent to 47 percent, the poll showed.
Similarly, those who said they do not have confidence in their government increased from 36 percent in 2022 to 66 percent now, the survey revealed. From 2022 to 2023, it increased by 13 percentage points.
The survey also revealed that the majority of Ukrainians, 92 percent, have confidence in their military. This number was only slightly down from the 95 percent who voiced confidence inthe government in 2023 and an even smaller difference from 2022 at 94 percent.
More than half of Ukrainians, 62 percent, also had confidence in financial institutions or banks -- an increase from 2022 and 2023, when that figure stood at 57 percent.
The results were based on a sample of roughly 1,000 people per year in Ukraine aged 15 and older. The margin of error is between 3.6 and 4.3 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
