FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Managing your weight can be a challenge. No matter your age, lifestyle or the condition of your health, finding a good team and developing a plan is an important first step. “Hope is here. That's why we're here. As your health coach. I'm like your health because I'm your health partner,” said Dr. Dominic Dizon, medical director at Dizon Medicine. Step one is building a team that can design a program that’s right for you, and Dizon says it starts with your primary care provider.  “They know you. They know your medical history. They know what motivates you for weight loss. Moreover, there are certain diets and even medications that could be dangerous based on certain illnesses,” he said. How many times people try to diet and lose weight only to fail? But for Dizon, it's not about quick fixes; it's about achieving lasting success. “Fad diets come and go. They don't usually give you a permanent result,” he said. “People have to actually change their lifestyle to effect a permanent change. So, I initially start with nutrition counseling based on their medical history and I move on to something called weight loss apps." Dizon embraces the latest tech. That might be your fitness watch that helps count your steps and activities, but it can be more than that. “I use a lot of something called CGM, which is continuous glucose monitoring,” Dizon said. “This is when they use your body's interstitial fluid. You put it right here in your arm and it approximates the body's blood glucose. So these patients can lose up to 10-50% of their weight." Of course, the benefits of a healthy lifestyle change can’t be understated, and it’s never too late to start, or the situation too difficult to overcome. “I had a patient who weighed 400 pounds. He had everything. He had heart disease. He had arrhythmias, diabetes. He was on the verge of giving up,” Dizon said. “Not only was I able to make him lose weight, his A1C got lower. His high dose insulin got lower and lower and lower. I got him out of insulin. Now, he's 175 pounds. I kid you not. I kid you not." “Never lose hope. We are here for you. You can be very aggressive about your weight loss. We will talk to you about it. We will, we will devise a plan. It might be a year. It might be two years. Doesn't matter. Whatever you feel comfortable with, we will work with you,” he said.
