FORECAST: Temperatures tumble Thursday
Nov 20, 2024
Temperatures will head into a free-fall with the wind rolling through tonight, bottoming out in the 30s by Thursday morning. Once the cold front is through, the rain will end by sunrise, with skies clearing out briefly. However, this complex and powerful storm won't be done with us yet, especially with colder air now firmly in place. For everyone in the DMV, not in the mountains, Thursday will be a windy and chilly day with temperatures in the 40s and lower 50s. Into the highest terrain of Garrett and Mineral Counties, a multi-day winter storm will unfold as bursts of heavy snow start falling. A Winter Storm Warning is in place for Garrett County, with a Winter Weather Advisory in Mineral County, as conditions go downhill toward the end of the week.
Across the mountains, additional waves of snow will continue through Friday night, leading to whiteout conditions at times, with strong winds also continuing. By the time the event is over, parts of Garrett County could see 6-12" of snow, with lower totals just east as you drop in elevation. The key with this snow event will be elevation, with the highest totals at or even over a foot being found at the highest ridgetops over 3000 feet.
Elsewhere in the DMV, windy and chilly conditions will continue through Friday, with most locations not getting warmer than the upper 40s. While most of us will stay dry on Thursday, there appears to be an increasing chance of a burst of rain mixed with a few wet snowflakes Friday morning into the early afternoon. This would come with the backside of this system as it starts to exit, so we'll track it closely over the next few days. Even if we see some wet snowflakes in MD and Northern VA, it won't last long enough to accumulate or cause issues.
Sunshine will break out on Saturday as conditions start to clear up. By Sunday, high pressure will return and calm the winds down. After a chilly start to the weekend, temperatures will steadily rise into next week, reaching the 60s by next Monday and Tuesday. Our next storm system may arrive on Tuesday, but only a few rain showers are expected with this one.
