"The water problems in Sunland Park have been known to many for years, it just seems like no one was willing to do anything about them," said Israel Chavez, co-counsel representing plaintiffs in the lawsuit.
A group of Doña Ana County residents are suing the county, City of Sunland Park, and Camino Real Regional Utility Authority saying they've failed to give residents safe water for years. "Folks in Sunland Park just want water they can drink, water they can bathe their children in, that they can wash their dishes with and cook with, and they have not had that not just for the last year but for decades," said Chavez.
According to the lawsuit, for years the arsenic levels were above the EPA legally allowed limit. Increased exposure to the chemical can lead to a number of health issues including cancer. The suit also says the EPA notified the utility of arsenic violations every quarter for over ten years with no corrections made.
"A friend of mine, Jesus Baquera, said it best: the community's just looking for justice. Communities looking for water that they an rely on and confidence in their water systems," said Chavez.
The attorneys are holding a town hall on Thursday at the Doña Ana Community College's Sunland park center where people can learn more about the effort and potentially join the lawsuit. The town hall will run from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
KRQE News 13 reached out to Doña Ana County. It said it does not comment on pending litigation. KRQE News 13 also reached out to the City of Sunland Park and CRRUA but did not hear back.
