NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — For a brief time, the "Wands and Wishes Mermaids" are making a splash at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in the Great Maya Reef exhibit.
You don't have to go to Aruba or Jamaica to see mermaids, because they are right here in New Orleans at the Audubon Aquarium.
"It's really something that everyone wants to see, a mermaid swimming with ocean animals," Caroline Kauffman, A "Wands and Wishes Mermaid" said.

Kauffman tours oceans and aquariums with dozens of other "mermaids," and she's bringing the shell-a-bration to New Orleans for the third year in a row.
"They can see us diving in the exhibit, below us is the tunnel, and guests can come up to the glass and we interact with kids and we blow bubble kisses and make bubble hearts and we do tricks," she said.
But it is more than just a fin-tastic time. This mystical mermaid wants people to understand that we must take care of our oceans.
"We really focus on ocean conservation. Hopefully we are inspiring them to take some care and create a little more love for the ocean and the animals that are in it," Kauffman said.
She said they get asked a lot of questions like if they have parents, and what do they like to eat.

While the mermaids along with the other animals at the Aquarium are well-fed, one thing is still missing.
"We've been searching far and wide for a merman," she said jokingly.
You can catch the "Wands and Wishes Mermaids" at the Audubon Aquarium Thursday, Nov. 21, through Sunday, Nov. 24, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
They will also be taking photos with families. For more information, click here.
