STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) — This Saturday, the Bulloch Academy football looks to win the school's first state title in the sport since 1997.
The Gators, in their third year under head coach Aaron Phillips, advanced to the championship after beating Brookstone, 20-14. Coach Phllips saying they had Brookstone game circled for 365 days because Brookstone knocked Bulloch Academy out of the playoffs last season in the semifinals.
This weekend, Bulloch Academy will play First Presbyterian Day. The gators hope to send their 14 seniors out with a state title in the same place they started the year: Paulson Stadium.
"We didn't have as many 50 point blowout wins," Coach Phillips said, "but we had a lot of games where we scored 35 or 40 points, but we thought the teams were just overall better."
"We know we had to we know we had the skill and work set to make it to the championship," senior Shamar Jenkins said. "But it took more than that. It took a family, took a team bond. It took other stuff outside of just football."
"It's the biggest game I'm going to play all year," senior Joshua Mager said. "I'm a little nervous, but that always makes me a little excited that I get to play my last game and hopefully come out with a win."
The championship game is Saturday at 8 p.m.
