Habitat for Humanity of Summit and Wasatch Counties announced Wednesday it is using gingerbread to further its mission of housing affordability.Gingerbread houses will be featured in the organization’s third annual Celebrating Home Holiday Tree Show. It’s the first time baked goods will be a part of the family-centric holiday tradition.Families, nonprofit organizations, businesses, Rotaries in Summit and Wasatch Counties, architecture firms and students from local high schools are all among the decorators participating in this event. The event runs for two days, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7, at the Utah Film Studios and is free to the public. Friday is 1-8 p.m., and Saturday is 10 a.m.-5 p.m.In addition to viewing the holiday trees, gingerbread houses and festive décor, participants will also have the chance to vote for their favorites in each category.“This event highlights the idea that home is about family, tradition, being together, and feeling safe and warm,” said Shellie Barrus, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Summit and Wasatch Counties. “That encapsulates the real outcomes of families who work with Habitat to buy a home of their own.”Attendees, as well as those who are not able to make the event, can also bid in the online auction to take home something for themselves. The online auction of trees and houses will run Dec. 5-7. A smaller auction of holiday gifts will also be online from Dec. 2-5. The Park City ReStore pop-up boutique for seasonal shopping, however, will be in-person only.Money raised from the boutique sales and auction will help fund Habitat for Humanity’s Homeownership Program, which gives families who work in Summit County the opportunity to buy their own home in the community where they work.In addition to working full time in Summit County, program members must show a need for housing, be able to pay an affordable mortgage and be willing to partner with Habitat, i.e., contribute sweat equity hours. To sign up for notifications and to see the trees and houses online Thursday, Dec. 5, through Saturday, Dec. 7, visit habitat-utah.org. Bidding on smaller auction items of ski lift tickets, décor and experiences runs from Dec. 2-5, also online at habitat-utah.org.The post Habitat for Humanity tackles housing affordability in Wasatch Back with gingerbread appeared first on Park Record.
