Man gets 15 to life in Q Street deadly shooting

BAKERSFIELD, Calf. (KGET) -- A man who provided the murder weapon used in a shooting north of Downtown Bakersfield was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years to life in prison.
Keith Hamilton, 36, was illegally in possession of a gun that he gave to co-defendant Ira Kindle -- who fired shots that killed a man last year near 34th and Q streets, a prosecutor said.
Before sentencing, defense attorney Dan E. Chambers made reference to letters submitted on Hamilton's behalf and family members seated in the audience, telling Judge Charles R. Brehmer his client's involvement in this case resulted from "an unusual set of circumstances."
Hamilton has never been in trouble before and is "extremely remorseful," Chambers said. He told the court he doesn't believe Hamilton set out to kill anyone.
"That moment, unfortunate as it is, certainly doesn't define Mr. Hamilton as a person," Chambers said.
In response, prosecutor Samantha Allen said Hamilton handed over the gun so it could be used against Christopher Pudwill, 37. Eight rounds were fired at Pudwill, killing him.
"The true unfortunate situation is Mr. Pudwill is no longer alive," Allen said.
Brehmer imposed the life term for Hamilton's second-degree murder conviction. Hamilton also was found guilty of an accessory charge, and was sentenced to serve two years concurrent with the lengthier term.
Last month, Kindle, 46, was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison, plus five years.
Early on March 18, 2023, Kindle and Hamilton were drinking outside the Family Food Market on 34th Street.
Upon seeing Pudwill across the street, Kindle got a gun from Hamilton. A third person distracted Pudwill as Kindle shot him.
Surveillance video captured the shooting.
Kindle and Hamilton "calmly walked away," and Hamilton later tried getting rid of the gun, according to the District Attorney's Office. Police found the weapon. Both men were found guilty in September.
