AUSTIN (KXAN) — 'Tis the season for holiday travel at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, Austin airport officials are reminding passengers to prepare for busier travel conditions as they take to the skies. An airport spokesperson told KXAN travelers are encouraged to arrive a minimum of 2.5 hours early for domestic flights and at least three hours early for domestic flights.
That early arrival time is critical, the spokesperson added, given some federal agency staffing shortages impacting operations.
"Recently, we have seen delays in flight schedules and passenger processing due to federal agency staffing shortages," the spokesperson said in an email to KXAN.
Historically, AUS' Thanksgiving travel period has run from the Friday prior to Thanksgiving to the Monday following the holiday. The spokesperson added airport officials will have more specifics on Thanksgiving travel later this week.
This year's holiday festivities come amid heightened construction at the airport as part of the Journey With AUS program. Currently, active construction is underway on the international arrivals area of baggage claim, the Transportation Security Administration Checkpoint 3 closure and the West Gate expansion.
Updates on those projects can be tracked online, although the spokesperson said AUS isn't expecting any "near term" impacts for passengers.
"While parts of the Barbara Jordan Terminal are under active construction due to projects like the West Gate Expansion, West Infill, and International Arrivals improvements, passengers are not likely to be affected in the near term," the spokesperson said.
AUS' online traveler resources outline carry-on and checked luggage provisions, how to check flight statuses before arriving, pickup and drop-off best practices and how to travel with children and pets. Those planning to park at AUS can review lot and garage parking fees and reserve a parking spot in advance of their trip online.
