Wickliffe addressing irrigation at Green Ridge Golf Course
Nov 20, 2024
Wickliffe Mayor Joe Sakacs recently reported that the lack of water at Green Ridge Golf Course is going to be addressed early next year.
Dredging will be the first step in addressing the lack of water at the course, according to City Engineer Peter Formica. The course is located at 29150 Ridge Road.
Formica reported that the current estimate is $150,000 for dredging the public golf course’s pond.
“The contractor will be mobilizing and hopefully starting work,” he said. “We will then have a water source.”
Formica said that adding an irrigation system is expensive, so the city is looking into how to do it in phases.
“It could be possible to do some of the work in house,” he said, noting the city is also looking into acquiring funding. “There is a water system and it is still working, however it is only for the greens, not the fairways.”
People will still be able to play golf while the dredging is in process with the exception of one hole, Formica said.
Councilperson Matthew Jaworski has expressed concerns regarding losing the course due to its current condition. Councilperson James Bala has also observed that the course has been exceptionally dry this year and is hoping the dredging will improve the condition of the greens.
While water is getting to the greens, Formica noted his estimate to complete the irrigation system is $1 million.
“There is a tank on the back of the gator that is used to water as well,” said Sakacs. “This has been pushed down the road for years and we are trying to make the necessary repairs now.”
Councilperson Randy Gerhardstein has suggested that council members visit the course and the clubhouse to see the area suggested for the golf simulators — systems that allow golfers to play without needing a course or driving range — prior to awarding any money to this project as they are suggesting investigating ways to pay for an update to the irrigation system.
“The irrigation is more important,” he said. “It is rough upstairs and this should be considered.”
Sakacs said money from the simulator would be made back in a year and suggested there are requests for leagues.
Council President Edward Levon noted the simulator will be discussed with the regular budget going forward.
