Eversource warning customers of utility schemes
Nov 19, 2024
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Eversource is warning customers to be on the lookout for scammers contacting them, pretending to be representatives of the utility company.
Whether it's by phone, email, or at the door, these scammers use urgency or threats to shut off your power to get you to provide personal information or make payments.
Eversource wants customers to know that they do not solicit door-to-door or on the phone on behalf of third-party energy suppliers. All Eversource employees carry photo identification, wear branded clothing, and drive company vehicles.
They would never ask customers to use prepaid debit cards or go to a department or grocery store to make a payment. Jared Lawrence with Eversource told 22News, "Because we have been so effective at getting the word out over the years about the typical scams---the scammers are not going away, they are trying to innovate. If you hear something that does feel a little bit off your instincts should always be hung up. Don't trust that text that came out of the blue..always go and verify with a legitimate source."
Customers facing disconnection due to non-payment should receive several written notices, including an alert on their bill, that includes information on how to maintain their service. Customers should not search for Eversource's phone number or website through a search engine---but instead, find the contact information and website on their bill.
