It's a push to embrace the artistic and cultural nature of Santa Fe by transforming underwhelming medians at the city's entryways into vibrant beacons full of creativity. "When people come to Santa Fe, we want to put our best foot forward, we want people to really see what Santa Fe is all about and this is a great opportunity to really put our rich culture our artwork, everything out for our public," said Melissa McDonald, Project Manager for Parks & Open Space Division.
The Santa Fe Median Gateway Improvements Project has been in the works since the summer with the goal of redesigning four city entrances including near Saint Francis, Cerrillos, Airport Road, and Old Pecos Trail.
Medians like the ones along the Old Pecos Trail were done in the 1990s and the city says are in need of updates. Parks and Open Space is working alongside the city's Arts and Culture Department to design the new medians which will include sculptures, new landscaping with native plants, and colorful art. Nearly thirty medians will get a facelift with the project thanks to nearly $2 million in funding for the design process.
"From those designs, we're going to be creating templates that we can use throughout the city so our ultimate goal is to really rehab all of the medians in Santa Fe," says McDonald.
All to finally give the city a different look. "A Gateway that is memorable and memorable to Santa Fe that doesn't necessarily remind you of any other city," said Overlie.
The city hosted a public meeting on Tuesday evening at the Southside Library to get input on the latest designs.
