Nov 19, 2024
The overall pattern is about to undergo severe changes withing the next forty-eight hours. ANOTHER WARM ONEWhat at day! After morning rainfall of about one-third of an inch, the skies turned to full sunshine and the temperatures warmed to 68° officially in Indianapolis. It is the 7th straight day above normal and the warmest for a November 19th in 33 years (1991 68°) while well shy of the record (76° 1930) several locations reached and even surpassed 70° Tuesday. Meridian Hills, Lake Monroe and Greenwood all had a high of 71°. Fall 2024 continues at a breakneck pace with more that 75% of the days above normal and ranks among the top three warmest on record. This amazing fall has yet to produce an official low of 32° or colder! This is the first time in over 100 years to go this deep into a November without reaching freezing in Indianapolis and among the longest spans (228 days) since our last freeze on record. The latest first freeze on record was November 27th, 1902. COOLING OFF OVERNIGHT The night starts clear, but change is underway especially with the passage of a cold front late tonight. The air behind this first front in a series of fronts is more seasonal. Lows early Wednesday morning will lower to near 40° or as much as 20° colder than Tuesday morning. The cool off comes in stages and preceding the next cold front Wednesday a quick shot of rain. Showers arrive around sunrise and quickly race east reaching peak coverage of 30% before 10am. Much like Tuesday, the skies will brighten quickly after the morning rainfall, but temperatures will only climb back to near 50° - the normal high for this time of the year. FALL TAKES A BIG FALL This fall is among the warmest on record, but it is about to take a radical turn to COLD. A surge of warm air into Alaska will dislodge and send the season's coldest air here starting Thursday. The cold, upper-level low will drop temperatures to December levels (mid/upper 30s) and drops the FIRST snow of the season here. With energy aloft and much colder air at the surface, robust, wet snow develops and falls Thursday afternoon/evening across much of central Indiana. This will be the FIRST of the year and falls at nearly on the exact date of the average first measurable snowfall annually, November 22nd. Despite warm grounds, a slushy snow accumulation is possible on elevated/ grassy surfaces. Amounts could exceed 1.5" under more vigorous snow bands. The probability of a 1" snowfall blankets much of central - east central Indiana. Our IBM-GRAF model produces 1.0" amounts for several locations. This of course is an early take and we will firm up the potential amounts and where it will be delivered later tonight and throughout the day on Wednesday. Be sure to check back here and on-air later tonight and tomorrow
