Indiana 5th, Notre Dame 6th in latest College Football Playoff rankings
Nov 19, 2024
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana football team remained at No. 5 in this week's College Football Playoff rankings.
The Hoosiers ascended to the position last week and remained there during their second bye week of the season.
Notre Dame moved up to sixth in this week's CFP rankings. The Fighting Irish have been working their way up the AP Poll — and now the CFP rankings — since they lost to Northern Illinois at home on Sept. 7.
Indiana is ranked fifth but seeded seventh in the projected playoff bracket. That's because the new 12-team postseason format gives the four top-ranked conference champions in the country byes in the first round of the CFP.
The Hoosiers are not currently projected to win the Big Ten and thus aren't expected to earn a bye or be seeded in the CFP's top four. In this week's projected bracket, Indiana was slated to face 10th-seeded Ole Miss.
Indiana (10-0) can still win the Big Ten. The Hoosiers play No. 2 Ohio State (9-1) on Saturday at noon at Ohio Stadium. The game will be televised on FOX59.
IU and Ohio State are two of four Big Ten teams ranked in the CFP's top five. Oregon is No. 1 and Penn State is No. 4.
Miami and Boise State were ranked eighth and 12th in this week's rankings, respectively, but because they're both expected to be conference champions, they are projected to be seeded ahead of IU.
Because Notre Dame is not in a conference, it can't earn a bye in the CFP. The Fighting Irish, however, are automatically off the week teams in conferences will be their playing championship games.
In this week's projected bracket, Notre Dame was seeded eighth and projected to take on ninth-seeded Alabama.
Notre Dame will play Army at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. The Fighting Irish will close their season out with a road game against the USC Trojans on Nov. 30.
