Lake Erie women fall to Twinsburg native Taylor, Clarion, 9073

As basketball homecomings go, they don’t get much splashier than the one Clarion sophomore guard Autumn Taylor had Nov. 19 at Lake Erie College’s Osborne Center.
A native of Twinsburg who played at Laurel School and SPIRE Institute, Taylor torched the nets for 24 points in the first quarter to get the Golden Eagles off and rolling to a 90-73 win over the host Storm.
Taylor finished with a game-high 30 points as the Golden Eagles improved to 4-1 with the wire-to-wire victory.
LEC slipped to 1-1 with the loss.
In her red-hot first quarter, the 5-foot-7 Taylor hoisted 13 shots and made nine of them. Five of her makes were 3-pointers.
“I’d like to say I’m surprised by what we all just saw, but I’m not,” Clarion coach Danielle Fleming said. “Autumn works so hard and does everything we ask her to do. It was great to see her come out so hot.”
Thomas came in averaging a team-high 20.5 points. She was asked if she’d ever had such an incandescent start in any game she’d played in her young life.
“I had 20 points in one quarter at SPIRE,” she said, smiling. “The shots I made in that first quarter, I shoot them all the time in practice. My range has always been good.”
As pleased as she was to get back home and help her team post an impressive ‘W,’ Thomas said the meaning was deepened by doing so with her parents, Arica and Marcus Taylor, and brother Ice in the stands.
“It’s all love,” she said.
LEC coach Lauren Macer, also born and raised in Twinsburg, watched as Taylor’s uncanny marksmanship propelled the Golden Eagles to a 17-2 lead midway through the first quarter.
“She was impressive, for sure,” Macer said.
Clarion led, 32-15, after one quarter and 53-34 at halftime. The Storm were down by as many as 22 points in the second half but kept grinding, reducing the deficit to 10 points early in the fourth quarter before the Golden Eagles again padded their lead.
“It was a testament to their will to keep fighting,” Macer said of her team’s refusal to buckle under the weight of Clarion’s point production.
Senior guard Lilee Carlson finished with a team-high 16 points for the Storm. Freshman guard Caitlin Titler chipped in 15 points. Senior guard Kennadi Harris added 14 points.
Clarion also got double-figure scoring from freshman guard Zoe Guice (17) and graduate guard Tearra Cool (10).
