San Mateo County supervisors advance charter for special election to oust sheriff
Nov 19, 2024
(KRON) -- The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors have taken what could be a major step toward ousting embattled San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus. On Tuesday, the council held a special session where it unanimously approved advancing a charter amendment for a special election.
The special election, which would take place on March 4, 2025, would ask voters to decide whether the council has the power to remove the sheriff from office.
There have been growing calls for the sheriff to resign her office.
On Monday, five congressional and state leaders from San Mateo County joined the chorus calling for Corpus to step down, saying her continued tenure impacts public safety. Corpus is at the center of a firestorm centered around a scathing report released last week.

The report, from independent investigator and former Judge LaDoris Cordell, included findings alleging abuse of power, retaliation, intimidation, homophobia and racism under Corpus' tenure. The sheriff has remained defiant in the face of calls for her to resign.
At last week's supervisors' meeting, Corpus announced she would be promoting her chief of staff, Victor Aenlle, to assistant sheriff. Aenlle is not a sworn officer. The independent report last week alleges an intimate relationship between Corpus and Aenlle.
Despite the report recommending that both should resign, Corpus has dug in her heels. On Monday, she released a statement, saying, "I am not going anywhere."
Supervisors must now hold a second public vote on the proposed ordinance at the Dec. 3 meeting, according to the County of San Mateo.
