CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office has confirmed there has been a "missed jury duty" scam that has recently been targeting its residents. According to the sheriff's office, a resident of Chesterfield County was contacted by an individual that identified themselves as an employee for the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office. The person who called told the victim that a warrant had been issued to the person for failure to appear for jury duty. The victim was also advised by the caller that they needed to pay a fee "to lift the bond" using a prepaid card. The Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office confirmed that this is a scam and that they would never instruct someone to pay money to make charges "go away." Additionally, the sheriff's office would never ask you to meet with a deputy and pay using a pre-paid card. Active warrants can be viewed online on Chesterfield County's website -- by typing in active warrants in the search field. If you are called by someone who is identifying themselves as an employee of the sheriff's office and you are unsure if they really are an actual employee of the sheriff's office -- tell the caller you will call them back to verify their identity.
