UPDATE: GEORGETOWN, Ky. (ABC 36 News Now) — The man accused of killing Scott County Deputy Caleb Conley during a traffic stop in 2023 is seeking to have the death penalty removed as a sentencing option in his case. Steven Sheangshang appeared in court Tuesday, where his defense team argued for the motion, citing serious mental illness. The judge did not issue a ruling on the request during the hearing. Previously, the court denied Sheangshang’s request to move his trial from Scott County to Jefferson County, suggesting Shelby County as an alternative venue. A decision on the change of venue is still pending. The court also addressed Sheangshang’s confinement conditions, partially granting a motion to amend them. While he will remain in an isolated cell, Sheangshang is now permitted additional time outside his cell and access to more reading materials, easing restrictions that previously allowed only one hour outside and one book per month. Sheangshang is accused of fatally shooting Deputy Conley during a traffic stop on I-75 in Georgetown in May 2023. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 9, with his trial set to begin early next year.     ORIGINAL STORY: FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (ABC 36 News Now) — A Franklin County man accused of killing his son is set to appear in court for a preliminary hearing. Steven Girtley, 60, is charged with murder in the death of his son, 36-year-old Justin Girtley. According to Kentucky State Police, the incident occurred on November 9 during an argument on Flat Creek Road. Investigators allege that Steven Girtley shot his son before fleeing the scene. Authorities launched a manhunt, and Girtley remained on the run for several days. On November 14, troopers located him hiding inside a barn on his property, where he was arrested and taken into custody. The investigation into the case is ongoing, and additional updates will be provided as they become available.
