In a surprising development, Craig Angelos, the 24th athletic director in University of Hawaii history, is expected to be removed from his position, according to sources. UH President David Lassner reportedly informed Angelos last week that he would not be retained. Neither Angelos nor the university has responded to questions regarding the decision. Angelos, an at-will employee not under contract, could be dismissed or leave his position at any time. Angelos brought nearly three decades of collegiate leadership experience to the role and celebrated several key accomplishments during his tenure. Among these were securing UH’s full-time membership in the Mountain West Conference, eliminating travel subsidies starting in 2026, and adding chartered flights for Hawaii football. Former UH player, coach, and current broadcaster Rich Miano expressed his disappointment, calling the decision abrupt and reflective of continued head-scratching decisions. “When you think it was 18 months ago where they started, [he was] not really given a chance to show he could do the things that need to be done. And here we go again,” Miano said. “It seems like only in Hawaii could this even be possible… But he has a family. He has invested sweat equity into this program. And for this to happen, people are still trying to figure out how it happened, why it happened, and the timing of it.” Miano added, “When you say ‘only in Hawaii,’ sometimes that’s a great thing, and sometimes it’s not.” UH graduate and broadcaster Larry Beil echoed the shock many are feeling. “I’m shocked. Absolutely. Because last night I was reading about Craig’s accomplishments, and I shot him a quick text: ‘Hey, congratulations, you’re crushing it.’ He goes, ‘Thanks, except I’m getting fired tomorrow,’” Beil said. “And I was like, ‘What?’ I wrote, ‘You have to be kidding me,’ and he said, ‘No,’ and then proceeded to explain. He didn’t know much more than I did, which was a concern. All of the circumstances around this are unusual.” Beil questioned the timing, especially as Lassner himself has only a month left in his presidency. “It takes a while to learn what’s going on in the state of Hawaii. I think everybody would agree to that. Just as [Angelos is] starting to get acclimated and doing some good things, the president decides to make this move. Why this and why now? I don’t know,” Beil said. Sources indicate Angelos is scheduled to meet with staff this afternoon. KHON2 will continue to provide updates on this developing story both on-air and online.
