Two roads that washed out in Stokes County being repaired

STOKES COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) -- It’s been two months since heavy rainfall caused two roads in Stokes County to crumble and buckle, leaving many drivers to figure out an alternative route.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation says they know it is frustrating, but they are working to make repairs.
Two roads only miles apart were washed out in Stokes County after water ripped through the roads
The structure that washed out on Franklin Moore Road was 140 inches wide and 90 inches tall. The new structure is a lot bigger.
“What’s going in is a structure that’s 23 feet wide at the base and 10 feet tall,” Division Maintenance Engineer for the NCDOT Mark Crook said.
The part of the road has been a problem spot for the NCDOT and has a history of needing repairs.
“Storm damage here back in 2020. It didn’t wash the pipe out at that time, but ... there’s a lot of water that moves through this little spot. Any sizable rain event has caused problems in the past,” Crook said.
The new structure is something the NCDOT expects to last a long time.
“The new structure will have headwalls, which helps keep the stream bank from eroding the area around the pipe,” Crook said.
The structure on Bethesda Church Road will be 10 feet wider than the one on Franklin Moore Road.
The NCDOT expects the project to take a few more weeks to complete.
Transportation Director for Stokes County Schools Matt Tedder says it’s an inconvenience for families that adds five to 10 minutes to bus rides.
“Five to 10 minutes in the morning means that they coordinate with families and start the route five to 10 minutes sooner to arrive at school the same times,” Tedder said.
Crook says it's a process the NCDOT wants to get right.
“The lead time on this project was really getting the structures fabricated. It’s an aluminum structure that’s prefabricated and brought to the site and ... bolted together,” Crook said.
Crook says the project on Franklin Moore Road is a few weeks behind Bethesda Church Road.
The NCDOT is expecting both projects on Bethesda Church Road and on Franklin Moore Road to be completed before Christmas.
