Baton Rouge charter school could close at end of year, officials say

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — J.K. Haynes, a charter school in Baton Rouge, could close at the end of the school year.
The East Baton Rouge Parish School System said J.K. Haynes was built in the 1950s. Its age has caused ongoing maintenance issues. These include frequent HVAC problems, uneven and cracked surfaces, poor lighting and flooding of playgrounds in heavy rain.
EBRPSS said the repairs' extent and cost have made it hard to keep a safe, ideal learning environment for students and staff.
The school is currently home to 121 students from pre-kindergarten to 6th grade.
The district will recommend that Pre-K to 5th-grade students move to Ryan Elementary. Sixth graders will go to Scotlandville Middle Pre-Engineering Academy.

"Our goal is to have teachers transition alongside their students to maintain continuity and support a smooth adjustment period," EBRPSS said.
This will go to the board in December. EBRPSS said the process would be effective at the start of the new semester if approved.
