HAYS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) – The Hays Consolidated Independent School District is installing six to eight-foot perimeter fences on all school campuses to increase safety.  Thanks to the 2023 bond acquisition and safety grants from the state, the district is able to replace and install security fences. The district said recent tragedies have motivated the projects.  “Tragedy brings awareness,” said Jeri Skrocki, Chief of Safety and Security for Hays CISD. “We reprioritize what we feel is important and what we need to manage.” The fences will enclose any outdoor spaces – like fields and play areas – to ensure visitors use the front entrances, Skrocki said.  “Our goal with perimeter fencing is to give as tight of a security perimeter as possible around our campuses,” she said. “Not only from our kids being able to get off campus but also to prohibit anybody being able to manage access to any of those exterior doors.” Skrocki said with the resources they have, bolstered fencing is the best way to improve security across the nearly 30 campuses.  “You don't want schools to look like prisons,” she said. “[But] we don't want people being able to walk up onto the campuses.”
