A woman was stabbed to death and an off-duty Chicago police detective who was trying to help her was wounded during a struggle with the attacker in the Portage Park neighborhood Tuesday afternoon. Paramedics responded about 2:20 p.m. to the 5600 block of West Leland Avenue where they found the unidentified woman, 54, stabbed to death and the off-duty officer injured, according to Chicago Fire Department officials and sources. According to a Chicago police alert, when the off-duty detective witnessed the stabbing, he fired his weapon toward the attacker, who fled in a vehicle. The detective was wounded in the leg during the incident but it was unclear how. Records show the attacker was served with an active order of protection on Oct. 9 that was filed by the 54-year-old victim. At an arraignment Monday, he pleaded not guilty. Another order of protection was filed earlier this year, filed by the same woman, records show. He is facing several felony charges, including aggravated domestic battery, strangling and attempted kidnapping, records show. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The detective was taken to Lutheran General Hospital, where his condition, which had stabilized, was listed in fair. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which investigates police shootings, said it responded to the scene and is investigating. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
