WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- A yearly gauge of the holiday season's approach is scheuled to arrive in D.C. Friday morning. That's when two Alaska-based truck drivers should pull into the District with the 2024 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree. The 80' tall Sitka Spruce comes from Tongass National Forest, the country's largest national forest, in Alaska. It's a long journey for sure, according to the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), which shared that the trip is more than 700 miles by sea followed by 4,000 miles by truck. US Capitol Christmas Tree Tour shutting down Hagerstown roads A star measuring more than 4' by more than 5' tops the tree, which comes from Shtax'heen Kwaan (Wrangell territory), the traditional homeland of the Tlingits (Alaska Natives). The AOC Upholstery Shop made the star. The tree has 5,000 LED lights and more than 5,000 ornaments on it. Forest Service employees prepare the 2024 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree for its trip from Alaska to Washington, D.C. (USDA Forest Service) The lighting of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree marks its 60th year in 2024. It is scheduled to take place during a ceremony on the West Front Lawn beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3. The tree will be lit from dusk until 11 p.m. each day through Jan. 1, 2025. The Architect of the Capitol consults with the United States Forest Service (USFS) each year to choose the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree. USFS said this was the first time the public was able to vote on the tree's name via soical media. The winner: Spruce Wayne.
