Former correctional officer sentenced for smuggling drugs into Wyatt Detention Facility

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A former correctional officer was sentenced to federal prison Thursday for smuggling contraband into the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility, according to U.S. Attorney Zachary Cunha.
In February 2021, inmates coordinated with outsiders to have then-correctional officer Kaii Almeida-Falcones, 30, of Smithfield, bring controlled substances into the prison.
Prosecutors said a smuggled package was discovered during a strip search of a detainee on Feb. 15, 2021. Lab tests confirmed it contained controlled substances. Additional drugs were later found inside a pillowcase in another detainee's cell.
Security footage showed Almeida-Falcones entering both inmates’ cells the night before the drugs were discovered, according to prosecutors.
Almeida-Falcones pleaded guilty on June 10. He was sentenced to six months in federal prison followed by 24 months of supervised release, the first six of which will be served on home confinement.
