Reports surfaced just before 8 p.m. Monday of a now fourth-alarm fire at the location, which was 53 Canal Street, a vacant building. A News 8 photojournalist on scene early on saw smoke billowing from the building into the air.
"From what we know at the moment it was a vacant structure, potential renovations, but we have no other information. They have contacted the owner, and he will be on scene shortly," said Lt. Jackeline Sierra, the RFD public information officer.

The crews first on scene reportedly found the fire on the first and second floors. The roof of the building did collapse, according to fire officials, who said it necessitated an exterior attack.
"We have over 14 companies on scene right now, so about 56 firefighters," said Sierra.
A nearby apartment building was evacuated out of an abundance of caution, but was untouched by the fire, according to officials.
Fire officials urged the community to stay away from Canal Street and West Main Street as crews continue to battle the fire. The investigation into what caused the blaze is ongoing.
