Sports Desk: Awards Pile Up for Devon Dampier
Nov 18, 2024
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – UNM Football earned a pivotal win on Saturday over #18 Washington State. The 38-35 victory marked the first win over a ranked opponent since 2003, and the first win at home over a ranked opponent since 1994.
"I think that game and that win versus that opponent at this time, ends up being a signature game for this program in this era. Whether that's defining or a turning point, I think we will find out later, but I think at this point it is certainly meaningful," said UNM Head Football Coach Bronco Mendenhall.
The good news continued on Monday, as sophomore quarterback Devon Dampier earned national recognition for his performance in UNM's win over Washington State, where he totaled four touchdowns and 367 yards of total offense, including the game-winning touchdown with 21 seconds left in the game. Dampier was named the Mountain West offensive player of the week and also a Manning Award Star of the Week and to the Davey O’Brien Award Great 8. Dampier also took home a huge honor on Monday, as he was named the Associated Press National Player of the Week.
"I don't think there is a player in college football doing more for his team than Devon Dampier is doing for the University of New Mexico. He is remarkable and he is playing really well. I am glad that the rest of the world is now understanding that," said Mendenhall.
Fans can vote for Devon Dampier to be the Manning Star of the Week through Wednesday morning by clicking here. The O’Brien Award will announce its National Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Now 5-6 on the year, UNM has one more bye week before playing at Hawaii on Nov. 30 at 10 p.m. A win would make UNM bowl eligible for the first time since 2016.
The Friday Night Football show is now heading down the stretch, as state semifinals will be showcased this week on the show. Fans can vote for Spirit Stick team winners and the Built Ford tough team through Friday of this week.
UNM Men's and Women's Cross Country will compete at this year's NCAA Championships marking the first time in a decade that both programs have qualified for this prestigious event which will take place in Madison, Wisconsin.
"Yeah, it's not easy to get there and there were some situations there that made it difficult, but yeah I am really proud of both groups and I think we are one of eleven or twelve teams who have both men and women qualified to the national championships, so we don't take that for granted and we are really hoping for two top ten finishes and its amazing to have two individuals in contention this weekend as well," said UNM Cross Country Head Coach Darren Gauson.
The NCAA Championships will take place on Saturday morning in Wisconsin. Both races will be aired on ESPN-U, starting with the women's race at 8:20 am.
High School Basketball practices have started across the state of New Mexico, and reigning 4A State Champion Highland is feeling optimistic coming into the season. "Yeah, we have got ten guys returning from the 14 guys that played in the Pit on that day and I think we can play a little bit more up-tempo. I have got the most guys that I have had since I have been here. We will probably be able to play ten or 12 guys at the varsity level, so that's something new that's exciting," said Highland Boys Basketball Coach Justin Woody.
The Hornets will be without star guard, Jesus Lincon, for the start of the season. Lincon tore his ACL soon after the Hornets won the 4A State Title but the team is ready to fill his role and play at a high level. "Obviously we are going to miss him, you don't replace 29 points a game, that was our message to the guys kind of in the preseason is, we need everybody to just do a little bit more and we have to do it collectively. He is also making progress you know, he gets reevaluated in January," said Coach Woody. "It's a big loss, but it's going to drive us even more to be even better without him and then when he comes back, oh we are going to be good", said Highland senior guard Isai Herrera.
Highland opens the season on November 26 playing at Sandia.
