Officials discuss potential Trump administration impacts on offshore wind

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — New Bedford officials announced the development of a new business hub Monday in partnership with Vineyard Wind.
The “Quest Center” is seen as an important pillar for the development of offshore wind in the city, but a new federal administration could threaten to derail their plans.
“I think we’d be less-than-honest if we said we weren’t concerned about it,” New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell said. “President-elect Trump, as former President Trump, many of us experienced his approach to offshore wind from 2017-2021.”
Vineyard Wind CEO Klaus Möller joined Mitchell at Monday’s announcement, saying it’s not the first time his team has dealt with a Trump administration.
“When we were developing this project, we also had a Trump administration,” Möller said. “We are very proud to work with all parties in the U.S.”
President-elect Trump has long conveyed skepticism about offshore wind development and hinted at plans to reduce federal funding for such projects.
Mitchell said he expects the local economy to be impacted.
“We are concerned that the industry may slow down,” Mitchell said. “My own take on it is there will likely be a slowdown, not a stop, not even a pause, just a slowdown.”
