NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — New Bedford is teaming up with Vineyard Wind to make the Whaling City the leading ocean economy on the East Coast.
New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell announced on Monday that the city would be relaunching its business support center as "The Quest: New Bedford's Enterprise Hub."
The $3 million renovation will include a new lobby, stairs, and common area for the three-story building, as well as a completely revamped top floor. Vineyard Wind's Offshore Wind Industry Accelerator Fund will contribute $1.5 million, while the city will pay for the remaining $1.5 million with an American Rescue Plan Act award.
"We're looking to make New Bedford a place that is really easy to do business," Mitchell said. "Especially in these fields where we have all these advantages."
Current tenants on the first and second floors are expected to remain, but the third floor will be reserved for the New Bedford Ocean Cluster, a designated home and collaborative space for offshore wind- and maritime-related businesses in the area.
"Simply, we want to connect people and companies from like sectors and provide the resources necessary so it is easier to do business, get access to resources, and grow," explained New Bedford Ocean Cluster Executive Director Jen Downing.
Renovations to The Quest are expected to be completed toward the end of next summer.
