CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Anyone who's within six months of their 20th birthday can apply to become a police officer trainee with the Chesapeake Police Department. With the age requirement lowered to 19½, candidates have the chance to graduate from the police academy and become sworn Chesapeake police officers before their 21st birthday, allowing for an earlier start to a public safety career. “This initiative empowers young adults to take a proactive role in caring for their community,” said Chesapeake Police Chief Mark Solesky in a statement. “We’re excited to help them get a jump start on their career in public service.” The Chesapeake Police Department said it offers the following for police officer trainees: A robust paid training program led by law enforcement experts Competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits Opportunities for career advancement in specialized units, leadership roles, and more Applicants are required to meet all other qualifications to become a police officer trainee, including passing a physical ability test, background check and other assessments during the hiring process.
