Nov 18, 2024
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Police said a 2-year-old child who died in a crash Saturday in northwest Bakersfield was not properly restrained at the time of the crash. The vehicles hit so hard, the little boy was ejected from his parents' car, and died at the scene.
The intersection where the crash occurred has four-way stop signs, with both roads at high speeds. Brimhall Road being 55 mph and Jenkins Road is 45 mph. While the 2-year-old hasn't been identified, a GoFundMe was set up in memory of him following that Saturday night collision.
If you would like to donate to that GoFundMe, it is linked here.

The crash happened just after 8:30 p.m. A 26-year-old man and woman emerged from the Chevy after the collision, and the driver of the Honda stayed on scene and cooperated with Bakersfield police.
"A male juvenile was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased by fire department personnel," BPD Sgt. Joshua Deutinger said.
Officials said the child was not properly restrained inside.
There were no other injuries reported in the crash and speed or intoxication were not factors in the crash. Now, there is a small memorial for the boy with candles, flowers, and toys set up at the intersection.
There is no guidebook to parenting or child safety, but Rachel Rivera, owner of Carseat Concierge, a company dedicated to car seat safety, works to help parents install and inspect car seats.
"It's one of those things where we think car seats, they're so simple, but really there's a lot to them and so having someone who is properly trained, in order to educate each specific family on their seats and how they work in their vehicle, with their child."

Rivera said there are different car seat types in terms of weight, age, and more. The safest way to seat your child, is the rear facing hold. "When you're facing the back of the vehicle, especially this reclined angle, your head and neck are just protected better."
