FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - He's done it again, not once, not twice, but a home run for Groundskeeper of the Year David Jacinto. "When I found out I got all excited, so I drank a shot of tequila to celebrate," said Jacinto. This is the third time Jacinto has won the California League Head Groundskeeper Of The Year award since he joined the Grizzlies in 2004. Since then, he has worked his way up, first becoming an assistant, and then in 2007 he earned the title of Head Groundskeeper. "He loves this team, and he loves the stadium and he's passionate about what he does," said Derek Franks, who is the Grizzlies President. "His passion has been really evident from day one as he worked his way up to head groundskeeper.” That passion took Jacinto farther than he could have imagined. "I was born in Los Angeles, and my mom, and my dad took me to Michoacan, Mexico. From there I came with my brother back to Fresno, and I started working in the fields picking grapes when I was 15," said Jacinto.  No stranger to hard work, Jacinto decided to take a job for the Fresno Grizzlies maintaining the grounds at Chukchansi Park for the last 20 years. "It's a difficult job to be a head groundskeeper of a professional baseball team," said Franks. "It's a lot of work and here we do a lot of events, not just baseball, and a lot of groundskeepers don't like that. But David knows that that's a big part of what we do here and he's embraced it.” After decades of experience Jacinto's legendary fieldwork is now just the beginning, the real magic happens off the field where his hospitality and incredible cooking skills shine bright. "I started cooking in the back and the players started to find out about it, and then they brought their friends and other players, and coaches from the other teams, so we party in the back after the game," said Jacinto.  It's in a field shop just behind the stadium where some of the best carne asada, ribs, french fries, and fajitas are prepared, making it one of Fresno's best-kept secrets.   Throughout the years many big names have shared a meal with Jacinto. “Teoscar Hernandez, Austin Barnes, I got pictures when they were eating here, Kyle Tucker from the Astros, Alvarez all those players were here," said Jacinto as he pulls out his phone to show pictures of all of them sharing a meal. Staff members say Jacinto is a legend, not just locally but around the world. And even though Jacinto has won this award now three times he hopes to win it again, bringing recognition to his team and community. "I think one day they're going to name this award after David, because I think he's going to keep winning it over and over again," said Franks.
