China Peak prepares for 'aggressive opening date'
Nov 18, 2024
CHINA PEAK, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Each year, officials at China Peak Mountain Resort say snowfall is unpredictable at best, but this season they're projecting opening the park for skiers even before Thanksgiving.
"We've had a couple of seasons where we've had the entire ski area open before Thanksgiving," Resort President Tim Cohee said. "We've also had probably a dozen years where we're lucky to make it to Christmas."
Cohee says in the last 15 years that he's been working at the resort, he's learned that uncertainty inevitably comes with every season.
But this season, Cohee says they've seen good temperatures and snowfall already, and Cohee plans to take advantage.
"We put a pretty aggressive opening date out there November 23, and I think we're going to make it," Cohee said.
But Cohee says with the "aggressive" opening date comes equally aggressive preparation. Though the resort's staff are constantly preparing for the winter through the summer, Cohee says there's is never an absence of last-minute work to be done.
"All of a sudden it gets cold and you've got some open trenches, you have some painting that hasn't been done, you've got some, snow cats that aren't trapped up," Cohee said.
"It causes a bit of panic and it causes everybody to move really fast, to get to meet an opening date."
According to Cohee, though the first snowfall might be cause for some anxiety preparation is underway and moving smoothly, leaving him with good expectations for this year.
"We're looking to get off to a great start here, get up for Thanksgiving and then, get ready for a great Christmas."
