‘Still feels surreal’: NorCal nurse $1M richer after lottery Scratchers win
Nov 18, 2024
(KRON) -- A nurse recently popped into a Redding convenience store on the way to her overnight shift to pick up an energy drink and some Scratchers. With only one of her typical go-to Scratchers games left, she also ended up randomly buying three $10 Power 10 games. That small change in routine would make her one of California’s newest millionaires, the California Lottery announced Friday.
Stacy Hagberg would make the discovery during her work break, a time when she always scratched her lottery games. “I started scratching and saw the one and commas and was like, ‘Oh my God,’” Hagberg told lottery officials. “My coworker thought I was telling her she did something wrong, and I said ‘No, I think I just won a million dollars!’”
Understandably in disbelief, the lucky Northern California nurse had five other people examine the winning ticket. “It didn’t really sink in until I had the money and could see it in my bank account,” Hagberg told the California Lottery. “It still feels surreal.”
Powerball ticket sold in Northern California nets $252K prize
Hagberg doesn’t plan on quitting being a nurse, but she told the lottery that she is relieved to finally live comfortably. “I’m debt-free and I can finally think about retirement,” Hagberg said. “I used to feel I’d probably have to work until the day I died!”
Hagberg joins three other recent Northern California lottery winners. Andres Gamboa won $5.8 million from a Royal Riches Scratchers game purchased from the 7-Eleven on Fremont Boulevard in Fremont. Michael Turner won $2 million after playing the Millionaire Maker Scratchers purchased from Novato U Save Liquor. Casey Cogbill won over $1 million after matching five numbers on his Powerball ticket purchased in Woodland.
The owner of the ampm convenience store on Churn Creek Road in Redding received a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket to Hagberg.
