Flash Burton missed his first three collegiate free throws. It didn’t take long after that for Rider’s freshman guard to get back on the line in practice, with coach Kevin Baggett as his rebounder, and start knocking them down. The results since: He’s connected on 12 of his last 14 free throws, including nine out of 10 against Navy last week in Annapolis to help salt away a third straight victory. “He and I had been working on his free throws,” Baggett said. “For him to step up and make them … we got on him like ‘c’mon you got to make them,’ and he responded.” The 6-3 point guard out of Cardinal O’Hara in the Philadelphia Catholic League is also doing something as a freshman that isn’t easy. He’s earning his coach’s trust. “Just big brass,” Baggett said. “He’s a kid that just goes out there and plays. Nothing really bothers him and he doesn’t get rattled. That’s unusual for a freshman, but we’ve seen this from the start when he got here.” Through four games, Burton is fourth on the team in scoring at 7.8 points while logging 19 minutes per contest. He’s coming off a 16-point performance at Navy. “When I was getting recruited, (Baggs) took me into the locker room and was like I’ll work with you,” Burton said. “I said alright I’ll work.” Burton said the biggest difference between high school and college are the little details. “They want you to be perfect,” Burton said. “If you aren’t perfect, they are going to get on you, but you can’t take it personally. It’s like a business now, so you have to treat it like a business. Defensively, it was a struggle at first. They used to kill me at practice. I hold my own now.” Burton’s quick rise to reliable rotation player gives Rider depth in the backcourt. Ruben Rodriguez has started the first four games and Andre Young, who is dealing with a toe injury, has had a few moments as well. With T.J. Weeks Jr. (16.0 points, 40.7% from 3) and Jay Alvarez (9.8 points, 47.4% from 3) off to good starts shooting the ball, Ife West-Ingram shining in his first career start and Zion Cruz getting closer to full fitness after seven points in a 13-minute debut, the Broncs (3-1) are coming off a season-high in points (90) and shooting percentage (52.9%) as they head to Iowa (4-0) on Tuesday night for the fifth of seven straight road games to start the season. “We don’t even realize how good we can be,” Burton said. “But we’re going to get there.” Rider Gameday WHO: Rider (3-1) at Iowa (4-0) WHEN: Tuesday, 8 p.m., Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Iowa City, Iowa TV: B1G+ LAST TIME OUT: Rider def. AP Poll Notes — Big jumps for Purdue and Kentucky after the Boilermakers beat Alabama and the Wildcats defeated Duke. Just how high to rank those two, especially still two weeks into the season when most haven’t played more than four games, was tough. Settled on six and seven, which, in turn, dropped some teams that didn’t lose this week. — Kansas, UConn, Gonzaga, Auburn and Alabama were my top five. Crimson Tide dropped from three to five after falling to Purdue. — Arizona tumbled from 10 to 17 following its loss to Wisconsin. — Speaking of the Badgers, they were the only new team on my list this week. Wisconsin replaced Big Ten rival Ohio State, which dropped out. — Ace Bailey made his injury-delayed debut at Rutgers and scored 17 points. It’s not just Bailey and fellow fabulous frosh Dylan Harper, though. Steve Pikiell has built a team with a solid role players around them like Zach Martini and Jordan Derkack. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that those two Jersey guys will be the glue to hold it together. — Teams outside the big five conferences to keep an eye on: High Point (4-0), VCU (4-0), Loyola Chicago (4-0), Saint Mary’s (4-0), Furman (4-0). My poll: Kansas (4-0) UConn (3-0) Gonzaga (3-0) Auburn (3-0) Alabama (3-1) Purdue (4-0) Kentucky (3-0) Iowa State (2-0) Duke (3-1) Baylor (3-1) North Carolina (2-1) Tennessee (4-0) Houston (2-1) Creighton (4-0) Indiana (3-0) Marquette (4-0) Arizona (2-1) Cincinnati (3-0) Florida (4-0) Texas A&M (3-1) Arkansas (2-1) St. John’s (4-0) Rutgers (3-0) Wisconsin (4-0) Ole Miss (4-0)
