Town reduces speed limit amid National Crash Responders Safety Week
Nov 18, 2024
AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - It's National Crash Responders Safety Week.
The Federal Highway Administration is reminding people to avoid being distracted while driving, look ahead, and not at their phones.
Slow down, move over, and always be alert.
National Crash Responders Safety Week is dedicated to keeping law enforcement, public works, fire officials, and towers safe.
This year's theme is, Responders ahead! Reduce your speed as you proceed.
This comes as the Town of Amherst recently implemented a 25-mile-per-hour speed limit town-wide.
"We really got to pay attention to our crosswalks and our signage throughout the town. A lot of times unfortunately we get distracted and distracted driving is one of our biggest problems too. We also want to try and stay off of our cell phones while driving" Says Gabriel Ting, Chief of Police with Amherst Police Department.
However, it does not apply to some business districts.
You can find a full list of speed limits within Amherst here.
The Town of Amherst believes reducing speed limits from 30 to 25mph will lower the number of traffic incidents along with increasing safety for pedestrians, traffic responders, and drivers.
