NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - The City of Northampton is voicing its commitment to inclusion just days after one person was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Both Northampton and Amherst released statements, standing united in support of immigration. Officials at the state level wanted to make clear that this was a direct incident between ICE and one individual, not anything more. Urging the community that there are policies in place to protect immigrants and maintain these 'safe cities'."If ICE has an arrest order then they can do that, irrespective of whether a city is a sanctuary city or not," shared State Rep. Lindsay N. Sabadosa, (D) 1st Hampshire. Northampton releasing in no way did its local police department collaborate with ICE. In 2014, the city banned the Northampton Police Department from assisting in any sort of action. "It's important to remember this was an arrest they were making, not a raid. This is not targeting individuals for no reason. They were looking for one specific individual," shared State Rep. Lindsay N. Sabadosa, (D) 1st Hampshire. Northampton and Amherst are both sanctuaries, also known as 'safe cities', where migrants and immigrants can come together during times of need. Immigration is a top national issue with a new plan in place from President-Elect Trump. Governor Maura Healy announced earlier this month that her state's law enforcement and national guard will not assist in mass deportations if President-Elect Trump takes such action. "Our local police are not going to be deputized or used in ways to make arrests solely on the basis of someone's immigration status," emphasized State Rep. Lindsay N. Sabadosa, (D) 1st Hampshire.
