SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield City Councilor Zaida Govan and other local officials gathered at city hall to address potential relief for taxpayers. Springfield City Councilor Zaida Govan says her goal is to get property tax relief for residents. Monday, Govan and members of the community joined together at city hall to discuss her plans and concerns in the community. She says she received multiple calls from residents complaining that the property taxes continue to increase every year. And with many people on a fixed income, she says salaries don't increase but the bills do which makes it more difficult for residents. "I am proposing an ordinance that says anytime the city has free cash over $5,000, that we should use some of that money," says Govan. "Half of it, maybe three-quarters of it to property tax relief, and that way I think the residents will acknowledge that the city is doing something for them." She says the city has some good incentives but more needs to be done. Govan says the First meeting regarding these tax rates is tomorrow and that she has already spoken to other city officials about this idea.
