SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Two officers were injured after a Springfield driver allegedly crashed into their police cruiser on Saturday. At around 1:20 a.m. officers had their emergency lights on at the intersection of Chestnut Street and State Street for a motor vehicle crash when they observed a motor vehicle coming toward them at a high rate of speed. Springfield Police Spokesman Ryan Walsh said that the driver rear-ended a cruiser, injuring two officers, and ran away on foot. Sobriety checkpoint in Hampden County this Saturday Assisting officers arrived and located the alleged driver, 28-year-old Jose Morales-Velasquez on Chestnut Street. He was arrested and during the booking process, provided officers with a false name. His fingerprints were processed and officers were able to identify the suspect. The officers were taken to Mercy Medical Center to be treated for their injuries. This wasn't the first time, Morales-Velasquez had an outstanding warrant in connection with an O.U.I. arrest in June 2022 where he also allegedly struck a Springfield Police cruiser.
