PORT ROYAL, S.C. (WSAV) — Over 400 locals went bananas to participate in the Lab Monkey Freedom Run, a 5k race that all got started from a local artist creating a parody T-shirt design. The monkeys from the Alpha Genesis facility have no idea of what they started when they escaped in early November. Nathan Callender of Dustbone Apparel, also didn't realize that the creation of a funny shirt rooting them on would lead to a legitimate 5k. “It was just a silly parody design kind of making fun of a of a unique situation that happened in Yemassee, when those 43 rhesus macaques escaped,” says Callender. "Just kind of poking fun at it and it just ballooned into something just so amazing. So, so big." After the T-shirt design went viral on social media, Shellring Aleworks and Grounded Running, two local businesses in the area, decided to partner up with Callender and turn the parody into the real thing. Beaufort Memorial opens new childcare center just steps away from the hospital “After Nate designed his T-shirt," Tim Waz, owner of Grounded Running, said, "we just said, you know what? We have to make this an actual event…Within literally less than 24 hours, we had final meetings on the books and actually turned this into a real event. And after less than 48 hours, we sold out the entire event with more than 400 participants.” Shellring’s Nick Borreggine said they didn’t allow the cut off to stop other folks from coming out to the event.  In fact, they encouraged participants and non-participants to come hang out to listen to live music and sample the breweries banana flavored beer the "Escape to Morgan Island." Callender said the proceeds from all sales are going to Born Free USA, which is an organization dedicated to rehoming medical testing monkeys. “This is about building momentum to just let everyone know that there's other options, better options for those for those primates to live out their lives, you know?” Callendar said. The people made sure to show up and show out for our local escapees and their monkey friends back at the Alpha Genesis Facility. “It just it makes me feel good that people show up. You know, people have good hearts. People have good hearts. And that's reflected here today,” Callender said. “And it just goes to show people will show up for a good cause.  And how can that not be anything but heartwarming?” The race sold out and many other folks showed up to donate over $4,000 n total to Born Free USA.
