Miguel’s Jr. is opening a restaurant on the edge of Los Angeles County on Wednesday, Nov. 20. The 2,890-square-foot drive-thru is at 430 N. Central Ave., Upland, south of Arrow Highway and in San Bernardino County. But it will serve Claremont on the other side of the county line, according to Javier Vasquez, president and chief executive officer of the family business founded by his parents in Corona. This is the chain’s 23rd location. It has 18 restaurants in Riverside and San Bernardino counties and five in Orange County. The building was formerly Pollos Kikiryki, a Peruvian rotisserie restaurant. Miguel’s Jr. personalized the exterior with two murals by Corinne Pulsinelle. One depicts the brand’s foods and fresh ingredients, Vassquez said in a phone interview, and the other depicts the brand’s history. “It just tries to capture who we are.” Miguel’s Jr. serves a menu based on the foods of Central Mexico, where co-founder Mary Vasquez grew up. Recent additions include an expanded breakfast lineup and a trio of bowls. The chain has brought back its seasonal tamales, including a new Turkey Mole Tamale that will only be available through Nov. 27. “If you look at the history of mole, it was really designed for turkey,” Javier Vasquez said. “Mole gives it a sauce to make it moist.” It will be followed by a Chile Cheese Tamale, available Nov. 29-Dec. 10. Chile Rojo Pork and Spicy Chicken Tamales will be available through Dec. 31. Miguel’s Jr. will begin serving the traditional winter soup pozole in January. Recent additions to the menu include an expanded breakfast lineup with pancakes and a breakfast taco with scrambled eggs, bacon, cheese and green sauce. Javier Vasquez said it has become popular. Earlier in the summer, Miguel’s Jr. introduced a trio of bowls with choice of protein. In addition, the chain offers frequent one-day discounts to its email and text subscribers.
