PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence woman is facing charges after allegedly driving under the influence on a Connecticut highway Sunday evening. Connecticut State Police responded to Route 2 near Exit 5 in East Hartford just before 5:30 p.m. for reports of an erratic driver. Callers claimed a white SUV had been swerving across lanes and nearly collided with other vehicles before pulling over onto the right shoulder, according to the incident report. Police said one witness stopped and took the keys from the SUV's driver, later identified as 37-year-old Javglad D. Garcia. Troopers arrived to find Garcia in the backseat holding a child. Garcia reportedly told them she had pulled over because she couldn't see well. Troopers noted signs of intoxication, including watery eyes, slurred speech, and two wine packages on the floor behind the driver's seat, according to the incident report. Despite Garcia claiming she hadn't consumed alcohol, police said she failed a series of field sobriety tests. Garcia was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, risk of injury to a child and second-degree reckless endangerment. Her vehicle was towed, and the child, who police said was uninjured, was brought to Connecticut State Police headquarters. Police said the child was eventually picked up by a guardian. Garcia was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Manchester Superior Court on Dec. 13. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
