FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — Guns for Groceries is a campaign that aims to take unwanted firearms off of the streets. From 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Saturday, participants can drop off a gun, no questions asked, at Blessed Trinity Church on Plymouth Avenue in Fall River or Pilgrim United Church of Christ on Purchase Street in New Bedford. Organizers will give out $100 grocery store gift cards for each handgun they receive and $75 gift cards for each long gun. Anyone who turns in BB guns, pellet guns, knives or ammunition will be given Domino's Pizza gift certificates. Free gun locks will also be available to anyone who needs them. The campaign was started by the late Reverend Dr. Robert Lawrence in the 1990s after Fall River police officer Thomas Giunta was shot and killed while knocking on doors and giving out parking permits. The effort is now sponsored in part by the Fall River and New Bedford police departments, the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, and UMass Dartmouth.
